Notes on this Gemstone

This is an exciting and unusual gemstone with a bright and delicate countenance!  The blue part is due to the presence of copper and is generally known as 'Paraiba' tourmaline, after the name of the place in Brazil where this colour of tourmaline was first discovered in the 90's.  This colour has now been found in other locations but is now increasingly referred to as 'Paraiba'.  They are very rare.  To find a bi-coloured example is even more rare.  This gem surfaced in a private collection recently and we happen to know with a high degree of certainty that it would have come from Afghanistan.
